New Rangers manager Barry Ferguson has already named the Cyriel Dessers quality that he loves

Barry Ferguson should walk into the Rangers dressing room and immediately command respect from a squad who could only dream of achieving what he did as a player.

The newly appointed Rangers manager might not have the same success on his CV as his predecessor, but he at least knows what the standards should be and what a winning team looks like too.

What Ferguson also knows, is what a Rangers striker should look like with the current No.9 an almost constant target for those looking to criticise.

Barry Ferguson has named Cyriel Dessers quality he admires

Cyriel Dessers has 18 goals and six assists in 40 appearances this season which is a more than respectable return with plenty of football still to be played.

Speaking at the beginning of the season, Ferguson admitted that he was a fan of Dessers with one quality in particular impressing him:

“Listen, he’s scored two goals in two games, 22 goals last year and I don’t think you can get rid of him. I know Rangers still need in my eyes another number nine to come in for competition, but I like the big man’s attitude, sometimes he lacks that bit of quality, but if he had that quality he’d be playing somewhere else in a different league.”

It would be a surprise if there isn’t a change of formation and system under Ferguson and it looks like Dessers will see plenty of game time under the new boss.

Why Ferguson would regret putting his faith in Dessers

There is one small problem though.

As seen again against St Mirren, the 30-year old striker simply doesn’t have the guile or physicality to dominate that sort of defence.

In the league, he has eight goals in 24 games, nowhere near enough from a Rangers No.9

It’s not just the goals that are an issue either, it is his contribution in these games when his teammates need him to create space for others, link play and occupy defenders.

Good attitude? Yes. But that doesn’t mean that players who cause more problems should have to watch him run around aimlessly for an hour every week before trying to save the game.
