Rangers are set to return for top summer target Martin Skrtel according to reports in Turkey.
CNN Turkey have claimed that Steven Gerrard has not given up hope of reuniting with the 33 year old Slovakian.
Rangers were heavily linked with a move for Fenerbahçe centre back Skrtel in the Summer. A move looked plausible until Skrtel’s agent Karol Csontó said that finances surrounding the deal “were very far apart”.
Rangers moved for Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Gareth McAuley and Joe Worrall instead after Gerrard set about improving a problem area for Rangers.
With McAuley and Worrall’s deals expiring at the end of the season Rangers are likely to be on the hunt for at least one more centre back.
With Skrtel’s contract up come June, could the Slovakian be the answer?
Martin Skrtel would prove a solid addition
At 33, Skrtel might not have time on his side. But tell that to Gareth McAuley.
By signing Northern Irishman McAuley, Gerrard has shown that he likes to have an experienced head at centre back around the club.
It makes sense. As long as they also still have something to offer.
And Skrtel does.
He has over 100 international caps, he’s a brute force in the air and he can play too.
Even if we keep McAuley, Joe Worrall has already intimated his intentions to return to Nottingham Forest at the end of the season.
Martin Skrtel is a Champions League level player. If we can get him on a fair deal, to me it’s a great signing.
He’d be a solid addition to our squad.
If there’s a chance Rangers can sign Skrtel – on a fair wage – would you take him at the club?
