Mark Hateley and Alfredo Morelos looking over their shoulder as 32-year old Rangers star threatens

James Tavernier continues to be the man that other fans love to hate as the Rangers skipper continues to punish SPFL defenders for trying to remove the shirts of his teammates.

Of course, the Gers skipper is more than just a penalty machine, his contribution from open play and at set-pieces has been equally as impressive and shows no signs of slowing down despite his advancing years.

Silverware will be the ultimate goal for James Tavernier this season as he looks to lead new Rangers manager Philippe Clement’s revolution but there are a few personal targets on the horizon.

James Tavernier homes in on Rangers goalscoring greats

With 114 goals for the club, his name is already on the Ibrox Hall of Fame but there are a few other members in his sights.

Mark Hateley and John Greig are in the club with Alfredo Morelos and Kenny Miller omitted for various reasons; one being a lack of silverware, the other being the small matter of playing for Celtic.

Incredibly, James Tavernier is just one goal behind Mark Hateley and two behind Kenny Miller on the Rangers goalscoring charts, they maybe didn’t take as many but they both took the odd penalty too.

His latest striker from 12-yards against Dundee means that John Greig is now looking over his shoulder just six goals in front and El Bufalo, only 10.

Yes, he has his faults, but there is no way we will be able to replace the sort of outfit that seems him amongst some European football greats in terms of goalscoring defenders.

Even if you take his penalties away, the 32-year old is still on over 50 goals and that doesn’t even include his assists – not bad for a fee of around £200,000.

We all know what James Tavernier has to do at Rangers to “really” earn his place amongst the Hall of Fame legends already mentioned – win titles.

Picking up a ViaPlay Cup trophy as captain this weekend would be a good start.
