Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has leapt to the defence of former Anfield teammate and Rangers boss Steven Gerrard as he called out the “agendas” in Scottish football.

The legendary Liverpool goalscorer was speaking amid a woeful run of domestic form in 2020 which leaves Rangers’ domestic season in tatters.

A Rangers fan himself, whilst Fowler understands the frustrations around the league form he has encouraged the support not be drawn in by the “rubbish”.

“Nothing should surprise me in football anymore, but my mate Steven Gerrard supposedly under pressure at Rangers? C’mon!” said Fowler [Daily Star].

“I see lots of people who are clever and understand the game, but also a helluva lot of people who simply don’t have a clue.

“Even from a distance, I can sniff out the rubbish. Like the suggestion he’s lost the players. Absolute rubbish. Honestly.

“I’m sure he will get it right, but managers have certain periods when they’re under pressure and it’s not going the right way. Sometimes you have to grit your teeth and get through.

“Those are the times you need to support the manager, back what he’s doing and believe in what he can achieve.

“Certain people have agendas and they will never waste an opportunity to stick the knife in.

“In Scotland, I know there are plenty of agendas – and Steven knows that, too. There are a lot of people who want to see a name like him fail.”

Fowler is responding to the press coverage of Gerrard in the wake of the domestic collapse and whilst he might have a point about agendas, the team has given these guys ammunition.

Pundits and influencers from across the game in Scotland would love nothing more than a Rangers manager-less and in turmoil again.

Whilst Fowler definitely has a point – and for what it’s worth the Board agree with him [Daily Record] – the onus is on Rangers and Gerrard not to give these guys excuses.
