Kris Boyd says he thinks Greg Stewart could be a fantastic signing for Rangers, as quoted by the Daily Record.
The signing of the free agent attacker is yet to be confirmed by the club. However, the Record reported a three-year deal had been agreed back in April.
The 29-year-old was released by Birmingham City last month [BBC Sport]. That’s after two stints on loan in the SPL across 2018/19, firstly with Kilmarnock and latterly, at Aberdeen.
Boyd played alongside him at Rugby Park where he enjoyed better success, notching eight goals and six assists in 16 league matches.
“He is 29 now and at the stage where the next three years should be the best of his career,” said Boyd of Stewart, as quoted by the Daily Record. “I have to say I’m excited about Greg going to Rangers. He was brilliant at Kilmarnock because Steve Clarke gave him the freedom to roam around the front area, just off the striker – that’s why he excelled.
“It remains to be seen where he will play for Rangers, but I have a feeling he will fit very nicely into that number 10 role.
“He could turn out to be the missing piece of the jigsaw for Rangers. Greg has it in his locker to be one of the signings of the season.
“He is a Rangers supporter and will feel privileged at getting the opportunity. Again, like Jordan (Jones), he has the mentality to cope with playing for Rangers, he knows what the club is all about and the level of expectation.”
Verdict
Rangers fans are split over the reported signing of Stewart. However, this ringing endorsement from a former prolific Ibrox goalscorer might be enough to change a few minds.
The Gers were crying out for a genuine no.10 at times last season. According to Boyd, someone who can do the job is already on the way, without the club having to spend a penny.
