Rangers chose not to appoint Kevin Muscat in October but the Australian has now landed a huge job by taking over Chinese side Shanghai Port.

Rangers sacked Michael Beale back in October and fans were having their say on who should have replaced him.

One of the most popular names was Kevin Muscat, who turned out for Rangers in his playing days.

A real hard man as a player, Muscat caught the eye as a manager with Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan.

It sounded like Muscat was a real contender for the job – but Rangers ended up going for Philippe Clement instead.

Kevin Muscat came close in Rangers manager hunt

Muscat was one of the most prominent names on the rumour mill.

Reports suggested that Muscat had shelved talks over a new deal with Yokohama in order to push for the Rangers job.

Rangers did interview Muscat according to reports but talkSPORT highlighted that Muscat was told that Clement had pipped him.

Muscat has been linked with other jobs, including the Millwall role, but he saw out the J1 League season with Yokohama.

The Australian decided to leave Japan earlier this month – and he has now been given a bumper deal elsewhere in Asia…

Muscat lands Shanghai Port deal

Muscat has now been announced as the new Shanghai Port manager, moving from Japan to China.

Javier Pereira is on his way and Muscat will take charge from the 1st of January, following in the footsteps of the likes of Sven-Goran Ericsson and Andre Villas-Boas.

Muscat inherits a big name in former Chelsea star Oscar and will be looking to carry on Pereira’s fine work.

Shanghai Port won the Chinese Super League earlier this year and Muscat will be expected to continue that success.

Muscat’s deal is a decent one; a one-year contract with the option of a second year, worth around $2million (£1.5million) per season.

That’s around £30,000-a-week so Muscat is earning well in China – and may still have one eye on Rangers in case the job comes up again in the future.
