Former Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham finally had something to smile about in the Premier League with Jurgen Klopp hailing an ‘incredible’ save during Liverpool’s clash with Sheffield United.

The veteran goalkeeper was sharp as a tack as a Mo Salah volley fizzed towards his net at Bramall Lane, but it’s fair to say he’s had plenty of practice.

There is no glovesman in whole of England’s top flight who could claim to be busier than Wes Foderingham, the one-time Rangers stopper often a one-man rearguard for a Sheffield United outfit who’s return to the Premier League is starting to feel like little more than a flying visit, popping round for a cup of tea and an 8-0 defeat before saying goodbye again.

The Blades were, it must be said, much-improved against Liverpool. Though they could hardly have been much worse, the returning Chris Wilder coaxing an organised, disciplined performance from his charges while Foderingham put forward his own candidate for the Save of the Season award.

“Look, it would be extremely cool if we could have scored the second goal earlier!” Klopp tells the Liverpool website, Dominik Szoboszlai only sealing the 2-0 win late on.

“It was possible. I think Mo had after a corner where it was an incredible save from the goalie. I have no clue how he kept that out of the goal!”

Foderingham has come in for criticism of late, particularly after a dreadful error against Bournemouth in November, but this was more like it. Springing into life as a first-time Salah shot screamed towards the net and pushing it over the top from point blank range.

Once of Fulham and Crystal Palace, Foderingham spent five years at Rangers between 2015 and 2020. He was the club’s number one during their first season back in Scotland’s top flight under Mark Warburton and only lost his place after Allan McGregor’s Glasgow homecoming.
