Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson has taken a parting shot at outgoing Rangers chairman Dave King for stepping down amid the domestic league shutdown.

King officially stepped down as the chairman of Rangers this week after over four years in the role.

The South Africa-based businessman first told supporters that he intended on stepping down in a teary-eyed exit speech back in November.

But that hasn’t stopped Jackson criticising the timing of the move with clubs across the country gripped by the financial implications of football’s postponement.

“On Friday, King effectively washed his hands of Rangers while declaring his intention to go into isolation behind the walls of his Johannesburg mansion,” said Jackson [Daily Record].

“The world has changed immeasurably over these last few weeks and it seems likely also a huge chunk of the fresh investment on which Rangers had been banking when King first announced his exit timetable will also have been put on pause.

“That’s why King’s decision to head for the hills should provide Rangers supporters with serious pause for thought.

“King has chosen to cut and run at what is arguably a moment of even greater concern, insisting rather flimsily that he cannot continue to run the club from South Africa.

“To that end, Rangers owe a huge debt of gratitude to those King has left holding the fort.”

The inflammatory column is sure to grate on Rangers supporters with King announcing his intention to leave but four months previously.

King is an iconic figure at Ibrox and this scathing column more than does the man an injustice.

Despite the financial uncertainty of the domestic league shutdown King will remain heavily involved in the running of the club, just not whilst serving as chairman.
