Rangers could launch a pre-contract move for Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram after it was claimed he will remain at the Blades this season.

The powerful box-to-box midfielder was previously linked to Rangers [Athletic] with his contract expiring at Bramall Lane within the year and the Gers hunting for a new midfielder.

But Alan Nixon – the journalist who broke the story on Ryan Kent and Leeds United – is claiming the player is set to remain at the club with his future still up in the air.

Nixon believes that interested parties are holding back investing in the midfielder with the promise of Lundstram, 26, being available on a free next season.

The journalist also appears to confirm Rangers are interested in the former Everton Academy midfielder.

The Athletic report claimed there was a contract offer on the table from Sheffield United but it remains unclear how this news will affect that situation.

A box-to-box midfielder who is a powerful runner with an eye for goal, Lundstram fits the profile of the kind of player Rangers are looking to add to their squad in this transfer window.

Lundstram impressed for Sheffield United last season, scoring five goals and laying on three assists in 26 starts.

The Blades also managed an impressive 9th place finish after earning promotion to the English Premier League only the season before last.

Midfielder Lundstram also scored the opening goal in a 2-2 friendly draw with Championship Preston over the weekend.
