Rangers’ interest in Jordan Jones has been described as “mental torture” by the Kilmarnock star.
The talented Kilmarnock midfielder is one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership. Rangers were keen on the Killie left-winger throughout the summer, but never made a move. This comes after seeing a bid rejected for the wide-man last season.
Supporters had mixed reactions to the club’s interest in Jones. Then again, there’s no doubting that the Killie star would’ve injected some real flair and energy down the left.
Speaking in the Sun, Jones said that going through the speculation from Rangers was mentally draining.
“Yes, it does affect you. It is mental torture, really. You are getting told a lot of things and trying to concentrate on football but it is draining.
“Through those two transfer windows were two of the worst times in my life. But you just have to get back to your football as quickly as possible and let that side of the game take care of itself.
“Steven Gerrard has brought a lot of publicity to the game and he has done really well with Rangers so far.
“So it’s a good time to be involved and the game is definitely on the up.”
Split supporters
Whilst some supporters may have been doubtful about whether Jones could make an impact at Rangers, there’s one key reason he maybe should’ve been signed.
Ryan Kent is having to star down the left on his own these days after a bad injury to Jamie Murphy. With only Glenn Middleton available on reserve, Rangers could’ve done with another experienced player available.
Jones would’ve brought that to the club. He wouldn’t have been a guaranteed starter every week, but he would inject the type of flair Rangers don’t have down the left.
Rangers have been long admirers of the Englishman. Celtic were also linked with a move over the summer too. Whether the Ibrox club make yet another move for him in January remains to be seen.
Jones set up Kilmarnock’s goal against Rangers in the 3-1 win for Steven Gerrard’s men at Rugby Park several weeks ago.
It would be interesting to see how much he would cost. What would work against Rangers is the fact that Jones does still seem happy in Ayrshire. Killie will also want to keep him at all costs.
The Gers won’t be held to ransom if they do go back in, but Jones could be good cover.
