Jon Flanagan forcing his way into Gerrard’s first XI

When Jon Flanagan signed, there was a mixed reaction from supporters. The England cap and former Liverpool was clearly a talented player, but off-field issues brought with it the threat of controversy.

Flanagan also hadn’t been the player of his breakthrough season at Liverpool a few years ago. After being involved in a hugely regrettable off-field issue, it seemed his career was in risk of tumbling down the English divisions faster than Sunderland.

At 25 and released by Liverpool, Flanagan’s next move was massive. Disappointing loan spells at Burnley and Bolton meant it had to be the right fit.

An Ibrox reunion for old teammates

In many ways, Rangers were the perfect fit for Flanagan at the time. Huge club, like Liverpool, passionate fans, like Liverpool, and Liverpudlians galore moving to Govan.

Gerrard was an old teammate of Flanno’s and offered an olive branch. Since Flanagan took it, he hasn’t looked back. He’s only on a two year deal too and I fully expect that will be extended if he continues to impress. He could be a real asset to Rangers.

He would be even more important if James Tavernier’s valuation was met.

Flanagan looks passionate, hungry and eager to impress. He’s been rock solid at the back since joining and has also done well venturing up the field. That’s despite the fact he’s been utilised as a left back when he’s right footed.

With the passion that’s evident in his play, it’s like he’s fallen back in love with football through Rangers. Much to the Teddy Bears delight and benefit.

England cap and Liverpool first teamer

That’s the standard we’re talking about here. In the 2013/14 season for Liverpool – coincidentally the season Brendan Rodgers took Liverpool to second – Flanagan made 25 appearances. He was rewarded with his solitary England cap against Ecuador in 2014.

It was all going so well for the Scouse full back before injury and off-field issues stumped his development. It had a huge impact on Flanagan and he struggled to recover.

At Ibrox, he’s been given a fresh start in a productive environment. It helps he’s playing for an old teammate and friend.

Even if he is giving him a headache at the moment.

Rangers signed Borna Barisic for £2m but he struggled against Livingston, giving Flanagan a chance to impress. He’s been quite simply superb in the two matches this week and looked like that player of old.

In fact, he’s looked even better, and could yet become a vital part of this Rangers team and one of the first names on the teamsheet.
