Jermain Defoe has suggested on the BBC’s Football Daily show, that he wants to earn another deal at Rangers, despite being 37 and already contracted until the end of next season.

Defoe arrived in Glasgow in January 2019 on loan from Premier League club, Bournemouth.

He’s still technically a Cherries player, but his deal there expires this summer and he signed a pre-contract with the Gers back in January which will take him through until the end of the 2020/21 season [Rangers.co.uk].

The veteran doesn’t have any plans to retire then, though, and is eyeing a stay in Glasgow until 2022.

“I feel like now I just want to take it all in – enjoy every training session, every game,” said Defoe on the BBC’s Football Daily show, when asked if he’ll keep playing until he’s 40. “I’ve got another year at Rangers, I’ve got next season and then we’ll see what happens.”

“If next season I score 15 or 20 goals then I want another season and we’ll see what happens.”

Verdict

Defoe has performed well since making the move to Scotland, netting 25 times in 52 matches to date.

He’s fared particularly well in the Premiership this season, with his 13 strikes at a rate of one every 77 minutes comparing favourably to Alfredo Morelos’ record.

Defoe is a household name in the UK and was welcomed with open arms by Bears who, for the most part, are happy with what he has produced so far.

That doesn’t mean it’ll be an easy quest for him to earn further deals at Ibrox, though. After a long baron spell, the club badly needs to get back to winning silverware, and playing a part in a successful league or cup run would greatly improve his chances.

The diminutive forward can struggle at times when deployed up front on his own, but his finishing is still razor-sharp and there’s little doubt he has more to give to the game.
