Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has backed old pal and teammate Steven Gerrard to do something special at Ibrox and insists “there is something bubbling at Rangers”.

The former Anfield centre back spent his entire career kicking a ball with Gerrard and the duo formed the foundation of the Liverpool side for close to two decades.

If anyone knows Steven Gerrard well enough, it’s Carragher – and he’s convinced that the Rangers boss can lead the Ibrox side to success which would rank high in the Scouser’s own career.

“There is no doubt that Celtic probably have the edge in terms of the squad, financially also,” said Carragher [Herald].

“They have the belief that they almost win the league every year. I think Celtic have a lot of advantages that Rangers don’t have.

“But I think they will do it this year. I have seen in some of the European and Old Firm games how the crowd and the atmosphere has been. You think there is something bubbling here at Rangers.

“I know myself from Liverpool how it feels when the manager has the crowd and the players pulled together.

“It feels like that at Rangers when I watch them. I think, for him, it is probably difficult to top that (Istanbul), really. But I think it would maybe be a close second or certainly in there and about.”

Jamie Carragher – who earned 38 caps for England – saw first-hand the adulation that the Rangers faithful give Steven Gerrard when he travelled north to play for a team of Liverpool Legends against their Rangers equivalents.

Whilst Gerrard will always be a red, he showed why he once described Rangers as the other club in his “heart” [Guardian] by donning a Gers strip and taking to the pitch against his boyhood heroes.

This good, positive feeling around Gerrard has clearly contributed to Carragher’s belief that Rangers can pull off what he believes is an “unlikely” title win.

He also added that he’ll be cheering his “big mate” on if the Ibrox club can do so.
