Rangers have tried and failed on several occasions to add depth to the attack and find goals from the positions behind the main striker.
Alfredo Morelos had his flaws, however, for long spells – even under Steven Gerrard – he carried the Ibrox outfit on his back.
One player who jumped ship just as he started to find form was Josh Windass who is now at the centre of an unlikely transfer link seven years after leaving Rangers.

Josh Windass confirms Santos interest and possible Rangers reunion
In 2017/18, Pedro Caixinha assembled a rag-tag group of misfits, however, he struck gold with Morelos and inherited a young forward who had struggled with injury since Mark Warburton signed him.
With 13 goals and eight assists in 33 league appearances, Windass more than played his part in a very poor team, in a very poor season.
Now, not only could Windass be reunited with Caixinha, but he could also be reunited with Morelos if Santos persuade the Hull-born forward to cross the Atlantic:
“I don’t think it’s that much!” Windass told Henry Winter and Neil Custis on Talksport on the morning of January the 5th.
“I used to work with him,” the 30-year old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, said of the former Rangers manager attempting to persuade him to move to Brazil.
“It came as a surprise this morning to be honest when my agent called me.
“Obviously when your contract is up and stuff like that, there’s always going to be talk like there always is.
“It came as a surprise this morning because I’ve not spoken to or seen Pedro in a long time.
“But it is what it is, when you’re in form, this sort of stuff happens.”
Could Rangers consider a move for Windass?
Windass isn’t a typical winger, neither is he a typical No.10 but is currently bang in form for Sheffield Wednesday.
When he left Rangers, it was claimed that he wanted to play centrally as a striker, whereas Gerrard wanted to play him off the left or the right wing in a system that featured two No.10s.
Now, Windass could fit perfectly into the system that Philippe Clement deploys either in the attacking midfield role or as the second striker, a position utilised when Hamza Igamane and Danilo play together.
On a free transfer, players of a similar profile would be considered and a loan move has been mooted before for Rangers.
Put it another way, if it was a choice between Windass or Cyril Dessers as the third attacking option in the squad…..
