Is talented ex-Premier League manager a realistic Rangers target?

Ex-Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter is the main name being discussed by Rangers fans as the club hunts for a new manager.

The Englishman appears the most high-profile and most obvious choice to take over from Michael Beale, who has been relieved of his duties at Ibrox.

With Northern Irish legend and Rangers Hall of Famer Steven Davis to take interim charge of the club alongside Alex Rae, the Gers are clear they will wait to find the perfect appointment.

For many Rangers supporters, that would be Graham Potter, the highly-rated young English coach who has been out of job since leaving Todd Boehly’s bonkers Chelsea experiment in April.

Graham Potter a Rangers manager favourite amongst fans

Whilst there has been no official link to Rangers since the club announced the sacking of Michael Beale, with it anyone’s bet who the frontrunner is at present, it’s the former Ostersund and Swansea manager that is probably the most discussed in Ibrox circles.

But with Chelsea reportedly paying up £22m to release Graham Potter and five of his backroom staff when they sacked the coach, there are serious doubts that Rangers could afford the manager.

Whilst some might argue that the 48-year-old would forego buckets of cash to lead the Ibrox project, it would still cost Rangers an amount which would undoubtedly make Graham Potter the highest paid manager in the club’s history.

It would be an ambitious appointment certainly but as Graham Potter bides his time for the right job, there are doubts that it is a realistic one.

Potter reportedly recently turned down the job at Ligue 1 Lyon despite the millions that are inside that particular project, something which Rangers patently do not have.

Throw in the fact that in the face of Celtic’s dominance, the job at Rangers appears a massive risk for a manager who will be linked to every job in England’s top flight when it becomes available this season.

Rangers have also been linked to Graham Potter previously with reports earlier in the season claiming the Ibrox side were rebuffed after approaching the coach.

All of this makes us think that whilst Graham Potter appears a solid and obvious choice for Rangers, it isn’t exactly a realistic one and whilst we won’t rule anything out, we’ll wait and see how the next week or so develops.
