Rangers star Glen Kamara should leave Ibrox in order to continue his development, his international boss Markku Kanerva has suggested.

Kamara played 180 minutes for Finland between Saturday and Tuesday in fixtures against Bosnia and Herzegovina and France, with defeat in the latter match ensuring they narrowly missed out on a World Cup playoff spot.

The 26-year-old will now return to Rangers ahead of Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Hibernian, but there’s speculation about his future despite the fact that he signed a new long-term deal in September.

Kamara has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs in recent windows [Daily Mail] and it was claimed over the weekend that Steven Gerrard will try to lure him to Aston Villa after himself making the switch from Glasgow to Birmingham [90min.com].

His contract extension puts the Gers in a strong position to negotiate and a sizeable fee would be required to prize him away from Ibrox, but Kanerva feels the midfielder would be better off elsewhere.

“He’s very relaxed all the time (on the pitch), but that doesn’t mean he’s not fighting,” he said [Scottish Sun].

“Hopefully, he will continue his development. It would be nice to see him playing even at bigger clubs.”

Finland boss wants Kamara to move on

Most Rangers fans won’t be pleased about this suggestion from Kanerva, particularly after the upheaval caused by Gerrard’s abrupt departure.

That’s because Kamara has been a key player in both domestic and European competition since his arrival from Dundee in January 2019.

The club will need to start cashing in on some assets sooner rather than later, though, and the Finn’s time to move on could come in the summer, potentially after helping the Light Blues defend their Premiership title.
