‘I want to win trophies’ – Cyriel Dessers makes Rangers intentions clear as future gets questioned

Rangers have a lot of issues to solve throughout the team with one of them being bridging the goal difference gap to Celtic.

Theirs is currently 80 to Rangers’ 33, the cold hard statistic that results in a 17-point gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, despite a winning record in Old Firm derbies.

On too many occasions, Rangers have scored first, only to not put the game to bed or have conceded after missing a series of chances.

One of the guilty parties is Cyriel Dessers who, bucking his recent trend, scored with his first attempt against Celtic at Ibrox

The much-criticised Rangers No.9 is now on 25 goals and seven assists for the season, but he still faces an uncertain future.

Cyriel Dessers conundrum continues after latest Rangers goal

The first 45 minutes against Celtic is the perfect example of why Rangers fans are fed up of Dessers, despite his goal tally.

Up until his well taken strike, the 30-year old had touched the ball just five times.

Normally, he wouldn’t have scored with his first attempt either.

It isn’t asking too much to have a striker who scores and assists as often as Dessers but is more involved too.

A quick look at Celtic and Daizen Maeda is all the argument that is needed, and he cost less than half of what Dessers did at £4.5m

If Danilo or Hamza Igamane started as many games and played as many minutes, it’s not unfair to jump to the conclusion that they would score just as many goals but be more involved.

It is one of the main reasons why Rangers don’t have any control in games, there is no outlet centrally in the forward line to hold the ball up and keep possession.

Dessers future at Rangers remains uncertain

Speaking after the game, Dessers doesn’t know what his future at Rangers holds, but he is clear on what he wants:

“I have no idea about what’s going to happen in the summer. Not in owners, not in players. I don’t know who wants to stay, who wants to leave, who needs a resolve. I have no idea, so I cannot answer that.

“Yeah, definitely. I signed here with a clear intention,” Dessers said when asked if he wants to stay.

“I said that last week at the press conference as well. I want to win trophies with Rangers. Stay here for a few years, build on something. That’s my intention.”
