Hibernian manager Jack Ross has delivered his verdict on Ryan Porteous’ red card against Rangers, showing up some of the Edinburgh club’s fans as delusional.

The 20-year-old centre-back was sent off on the hour mark during the Friday night clash at Easter Road, sparking furious exchanges between the two sets of coaching staff on the touchline.

Gers and Hibs supporters then clashed on social media, with some Hibs fans remarkably suggesting that there was nothing sinister about Porteous’ challenge. Some in the stadium and on Twitter even took aim at Borna Barisic, claiming he had dived to dupe the referee into brandishing a red card.

However, there were no excuses from Ross with the recently appointed Hibees boss supporting Nick Walsh’s decision.

“In real-time, I’m a good distance away from the incident and I’m at pitch level,” he said. “But I have watched it again, it’s fine, it’s a red card.”

“The pace Ryan goes in at and he goes in high, it’s an error of judgement from him but I’m not going to hang him out to dry with it because he’s a young man.

“People say young men make mistakes, but you make mistakes all through your life and through your career and it’s how you react to it and how you learn from it. So that’ll be the key thing for Ryan because it obviously left us in an even more difficult position in the game.”
