Greg Docherty’s performance against Stoke shows how far he’s come

When Greg Docherty joined Rangers, we knew we were getting a talented kid who was determined to play for the club.
It’s been a year since Doc joined his boyhood club in a dream move. But it must’ve been a bit of a whirlwind first 12 months for the Hamilton Academy graduate.
Docherty was signed whilst the club was really in the mire. Post-Pedro Caixinha, Graeme Murty had come to the rescue and Rangers were toiling for identity.

Docherty was tossed into a team on the up in the league, but which eventually crumbled under the weight of that Old Firm defeat at Ibrox. There was little the then 21 year old could do to turn the tide after that.
But with Steven Gerrard arriving it breathed new life into the club, and into Doc. When he heard minutes would be limited, Docherty asked for the move to Shrewsbury. He wants to play football.
Not just for his development,
but to prove to Gerrard he has what it takes to play a key role for Rangers. Against Stoke in the FA Cup last night, where Docherty was physical, athletic and creative, he showed that he could well be capable of doing so.

Shrewsbury battled from 2-0 down to beat the Potters 3-2. Docherty set up the eventual 81st winner for Josh Laurent. It’s becoming a regular occurence.
His hardworking attitude, contribution in front of goal and his likable attitude has made him a cult hero for the Shrews fans. Docherty also seems to be enjoying it.
There are fewer players who you want to see succeed at Rangers than Greg Docherty. Performances like this are proving he deserves at least a crack at doing so.
This loan move has been superb for the midfielder and long may his form continue. He’s come on leaps and bounds at Shrewsbury.
