Graeme Murty drew painful Rangers flashbacks as he sympathised with a Pep Guardiola headstand.

The former Rangers Academy boss took to X to react to a moment on Sky Sports News which showed the Manchester City boss mid-headstand in the 3-3 Premier League draw with Spurs.

In a hilarious quip, Graeme Murty wrote “feeling his pain…” after sharing an image of the headstand and it’s raised a laugh amongst Rangers fans on social media.

The comment is in reference to an infamous moment against Dundee in 2017 when, during the first of his two stints in caretaker charge of Rangers, Graeme Murty performed a headstand of his own.

Famous Graeme Murty headstand

In a desperate moment for Rangers, the headstand and subsequent fall-out added insult to injury with the Ibrox side losing 2-1 at Dens Park.

The Graeme Murty headstand came after Harry Forrester missed a gilt-edge chance to make the score line 2-2 and it has etched itself into Scottish football history.

Speaking about the incident at the time, Murty claimed that the emotion of almost scoring and missing the opportunity meant he lost some control at the time.

“I normally transition out of that into a handstand and it normally looks quite smooth,” joked Murty.

“I was certain we had just got back to 2-2, and I kind of wanted just to curl up into a ball and hide, and it didn’t turn out that way.

“Personally, I am absolutely mortified but professionally I think I have larger concerns than how I looked on the sideline.

“If you ask any football person, this game grips you. It gets you deep in your soul, and the way you express that depends on the person.”

Good humoured Rangers “Man of the Year”

Whilst it’s not so often you see Graeme Murty mentioned alongside Pep Guardiola, you can never underestimate the impact of that infamous Rangers headstand.

It remains a stand-out moment from the club’s rise back up to the rank of Scottish Champions and fans have applauded the former Ibrox caretaker manager for making the joke.

Former Rangers chairman Dave King even named Graeme Murty as the club’s “Man of the Year” for 2018 in a tribute to his broad shoulders in the face of chaos at Ibrox.

Moving back into the club’s Academy after the appointment of Steven Gerrard, Graeme Murty eventually left Rangers for the Sunderland Academy set-up in 2019 to praise from Ibrox fans.

Most recently linked to manager’s jobs at Reading and Oxford United, Rangers fans will always follow Graeme Murty’s career even if the rest of the Scottish game will remember him for that headstand.
