Following this afternoon’s win over St Johnstone, Steven Gerrard singled out Jermain Defoe for praise, as captured by RangersTV.
The 36-year-old striker came off the bench to net a brace, killing off the opposition.
The manager had earlier opted to continue with Alfredo Morelos in the starting lineup, at Defoe’s expense, based on the Colombian’s recent form.

Gerrard praises Rangers forward after super sub outing
“JD had just as important a part to play to come on and kill the game off,” said Gerrard, as captured by RangersTV. “He had a volley that I know he’ll be disappointed about, but his two other finishes were terrific.”
“I loved his second one. Getting it out your feet and finishing it off. JD has done that and made a career out of it, he’s top drawer.”

Verdict
Having played alongside Defoe with England, Stevie G knew exactly what he was getting when he managed to attract the striker to Ibrox back in January.
He’s a superb finisher and while he blazed his first chance high over the bar, he was clinical with his second and third sightings, much to the delight of the supporters.
That’s now eight goals in twelve appearances this season for Bournemouth loanee [Soccerbase], with many of those outings coming from the bench.
He’s showing no sign of slowing down despite his age, and his finishing prowess will prove crucial at times during this campaign.
