A calf injury had ruled the 30-year-old out of the opening weeks of the current season, but he finally made his first appearance of 2020/21 as a substitute in a defeat to Huddersfield Town in midweek.

His first start came in the derby against Nottingham Forest on Friday night and he showed he’s still got plenty of quality in his left foot by putting his team ahead after half an hour.

From around 25 yards out, Waghorn ignored the wall and whipped a powerful free-kick into the left side of the net via the crossbar, much to the delight of his teammates.

It was his 26th goal for the Rams and first since February, prior to the footballing shutdown.

His stunning strike didn’t quite prove enough for all three points on the night, though, as former reported Rangers target, Lyle Taylor [Sky Sports], produced an equaliser for Forest.

The striker swept home a finish from close range in the 64th minute following a corner, to get off the mark in his seventh appearance since his summer move.

County did have the ball in the net in the closing stages, but Kamil Jozwiak saw his goal ruled out as Waghorn was deemed to be interfering with play from an offside position.
