Former Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty is playing a key role for Hull City in their bid to gain promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Gers-supporting Docherty made the difficult decision to leave Ibrox in the summer in search of playing time, after two years of unsuccessful attempts to force his way into Steven Gerrard’s plans.

The club received around £400k for the transfer [Hull Live] and Hull supporters were delighted with the signing.

Docherty had previously impressed whilst on loan in EFL League One with Shrewsbury Town and he’s now playing a key role in midfield for the Tigers.

The 22-year-old missed a pair of fixtures in November with a thigh injury but he’s started all 20 other league matches, usually alongside George Honeyman and Richard Smallwood in midfield.

Hull haven’t had it all their own way in the third tier, losing six matches already this season.

However, they’re currently unbeaten in four in the league and a 3-0 win over Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night saw them go top of the table above Lincoln City on goal difference.

Docherty played 82 minutes of the win before tweeting to praise the performance and to look ahead to a big clash with Portsmouth on Saturday.

The four teams immediately below Grant McCann’s side in the table all hold at least one game in hand, but the Tigers are still in a strong position considering they went on a three-game losing streak in December.

Docherty must be delighted to be playing regularly again after the difficulties and uncertainties that surrounded his time with Rangers and he’ll be hoping to soon add to his tally of two goals with games coming thick and fast.

While he’s not ruling out a future return to Ibrox, his priority right now is gaining promotion with Hull and earning the chance to test himself in the Championship.

A mercurial player who left Ibrox a year earlier than Docherty could soon be offered the chance to return to Scottish football, with a Premiership manager confirming his interest
