Filip Helander to the rescue as gritty Rangers grind out three points

It wasn’t always pretty, but thanks to Filip Helander’s header Rangers got the three points required to keep the pace with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

The Ibrox side came up against a spirited Motherwell side and with the game seemingly ambling towards a draw, up popped Helander (who has 10 caps for the Swedish national team) to head it home in the 80th minute, much to the delight of the fans.

Whatever you call it – a slice of luck, a gritty victory, the mark of champions – this will prove a huge three points for Rangers this season.

It’s important to have clung onto a victory today given Celtic’s 4-0 humbling of Aberdeen.

In a major boost for their goal difference and momentum, they absolutely thrashed the Dons in their own backyard.

It somewhat turned up the pressure on the match at Ibrox and Motherwell looked willing to take full advantage.

But after going behind in the match, Rangers never downed tools and continued to work hard against a frustrating Motherwell side.

Rangers will play better this season but there is undoubtedly something to be said for managing to squeeze out the three points.

We stay within touching distance of Celtic with the league games set to come thick and fast between now and January.

How big a three points could these prove in the race for the title?
