Rangers fans rejoice as Filip Helander seals win over Motherwell

Rangers fans rejoiced on Sunday afternoon as summer signing Filip Helander scored a late winner against Motherwell.

Before kick-off, some supporters expressed their disappointment at the starting XI and their fears were realised when the game turned out to be a tricky affair.

The visitors looked set to banish the bad memories of last season’s Ibrox mauling when a Devante Cole effort gave them the lead after 21 minutes.

The home crowd grew increasingly edgy thereafter, especially when James Tavernier sent his 38th-minute penalty off the post.

However, Gerrard’s men were able to turn it around in the end, courtesy of two very well-timed goals.

Right on the stroke of half-time, the Premiership’s top goalscorer, Jermain Defoe, capitalised on an error from ‘Well keeper Mark Gillespie to draw things level.

In the second half, the Gers applied plenty of pressure, but the opposition made them work for the winner, which eventually came in the 80th minute courtesy of Helander.

The big Swede rose to power home a header from a James Tavernier cross and secure all three points.

It was a vital contribution from a player who is quickly becoming something of a hero amongst the Gers fans.

Helander started ahead of Nikola Katic in Porto on Thursday and was widely praised after dominating the opposition’s dangerman, Moussa Marega.

Three days later, it was his efforts at the other end of the pitch that brought him the plaudits.
