FIFA President Gianni Infantino has waded into the debate on Scottish referees during a visit to the country.
The FIFA head was speaking as part of the International Football Association Board (Ifab) AGM, which is being hosted in Aberdeen.
The Swiss-Italian said that Scottish referees are performing at a “high level” but they can improve. He also stressed that issues around referees are raised “everywhere in the world”.

“Whenever there are some mistakes, immediately there is a call that it has to change,” Infantino said, as quoted by the BBC.
“We are human beings, the referees as well, they make mistakes, we need to understand, we need to help, we need to train.

“Scotland at an international level is certainly, as far as I can see and say, at a high level. Can it improve? Of course it can improve.”

VAR an inevitability in Scotland?

The FIFA President then went on to speak about the possibility of introducing VAR to the game here. Whist he described the system as “a success story”, he stressed there are multiple ways to introduce it.
As such, Scotland must take its time to discuss and decide which system is the best one for the country. Both in the need for refereeing support and in cost-effectiveness.

Scottish referees have come under some serious pressure this season after some high profile calls and mistakes. Earlier in the season, Steven Gerrard backed the move to introduce VAR after a manager’s summit.
Several pundits have also been
very outspoken on the standard of refereeing in the country, whilst Rangers Managing Director Stewart Robertson released an interview with Rangers TV challenging the current disciplinary process.
With Gianni Infantino also in the Aberdeen area, could we see the FIFA President at Pittodrie this afternoon?
