Rangers youngster James Maxwell has put pen to paper on a new deal at Ibrox as the full-back commits to the Gers until 2022.

The talented left-back, 18, is considered one of the brightest prospects at Rangers and his signature follows that of Nathan Patterson [Rangers].

Similarly, Patterson is a full-back but he plays on the right and there’ll be real hope the two can establish themselves in the first-team squad in the coming year or so.

“Every player has their individual journey, with James joining our Academy later than others, and since that time has flourished in the high-performance environment we have created,” said Craig Mullholland [Rangers].

“Excellent recruitment is a key element of the Academy process and James reflects that.

“He has had a fantastic Academy journey over the last two years – changing position, being pushed in our European Games Programme, being selected by his country for the first time and now training regularly with our first team.

“James was desperate to commit his future to Rangers as he, like the other Academy players who have extended their contracts recently, recognise this is a massively exciting time for the club and there has never been a been a better time to be a young player at Rangers.”

Naturally, Rangers fans are very excited at the prospect of the Ibrox club tying down one of their most exciting young talents.

James Maxwell has come through the Academy at Rangers and the club’s supporters would be delighted to see the Hummel Training Centre truly begin to bear fruit.

Rangers have been largely starved of players who have come through their academy and managed to hold a position down in the squad.

But with the Ibrox Academy currently flourishing under the leadership of Craig Mullholland and Graeme Murty, there’s real hope in thhis next generation of Rangers youngsters.
