Rangers fans want Ryan Kent in the side from now on, that much is obvious. Where, however, would that leave Glenn Middleton’s chances of game-time?
Kent is the outstanding number one down the left side. Jamie Murphy’s injury means he has taken the mantle, and is growing into his role more and more each week. It’s difficult to ignore the work done by Middleton in recent times, however, as he proved he could make an impact in the here and now.
Steven Gerrard clearly likes Middleton. He was almost like a parting gift from Graeme Murty, and will one day be a Rangers hero. Now, however, what does the demand for Kent do for his game-time?
Kent’s impressive solo-display at Livingston on Sunday was the highlight for supporters. In a match where everyone else totally underperformed, Kent stood out like a sore thumb. Many feel he now can’t be dropped, and simply has to star in the coming weeks.
Middleton also came on against Livi, but his impact was minimal.
With such a demand for Kent, you have to hope this doesn’t tarnish Middleton’s chances of more game-time. The Rangers youngster will still keep developing and eventually break his way through, but it would be nice to see a fair bit more of him this season.
Every game a must-win
Livingston, however, just showed how every game is a must-win and that Scottish sides can’t be taken lightly. This could encourage Gerrard to play Kent on a weekly-basis and put a lot more faith in a consistent starting XI. That’s not bad news for Rangers in any way, but it would hurt Middleton’s first-team chances.
In truth, however, there’s still no reason why the former Norwich kid can’t tackle the right-side. Daniel Candeias is again letting inconsistency creep into his game after an initial strong spell at right-wing.
Eros Grezda is still waiting in the wings, however, and you’ve got to imagine Gerrard is looking to integrate him into the side. With such potential and hype about his move from Osijek to Ibrox, we have barely seen him.
A desire to make him a success could see Middleton limited down that side also.
As it stands, the Rangers youngster is only ever likely to play the odd league game after Europe. With Kent going to have to perform in the Europa League, Middleton remains a terrific alternative for the left-side domestically. Playing him doesn’t weaken the side in any way, and Gerrard can be safe in the knowledge he can cut open opposition sides at home.
The Kent demand certainly doesn’t help, but hopefully Middleton can continue to play fairly regularly this season.
