Rangers striker Cedric Itten took part in training on Friday as he eyes just a third-ever Premiership start in Sunday’s fixture against Hamilton [Rangers.co.uk].
The Gers signed Itten from Swiss Super League club St Gallen in August for a reported fee of £2.7m [Sky Sports] and he’s made 26 appearances across all competitions so far this season.
The vast majority of those have come as a substitute, though, with the 24-year-old only starting two of his 19 Premiership outings.
Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe and Jermain Defoe have hogged the no.9 role, while Ianis Hagi has been regularly deployed in the right inside forward berth that Itten took up in his pair of starts against Kilmarnock.
However, Steven Gerrard admitted last month that the Switzerland international was close to breaking into the XI [Daily Record], and with at least two of his main competitors unavailable to face Hamilton, he’ll be hoping his opportunity comes at the Fountain of Youth Stadium.
Morelos is suspended for the game, Defoe is out injured and Roofe has been retrospectively charged with violent conduct and offered a two-match ban by the SFA, although at this stage it’s unclear whether or not the club have opted to appeal the decision.
There’s no doubt about Itten’s availability, though, after he was snapped in training on Friday as the squad prepared for the fixture.

The 6ft 2″ forward featured heavily in the photo gallery released by Rangers, as did new signings Scott Wright and Jack Simpson, who are both eyeing debuts.
Itten’s last league start came way back on 1st November but since then, he’s notched an assist, scored important goals home and away against Motherwell and impressed with his hold-up play in the closing stages of several matches.
Gerrard would no doubt like more attacking options at his disposal but Itten has earned a chance to play a full 90 minutes and if named in the starting XI, he’ll fancy his chances of netting against the team with the second-worst defence in the league.
