Ex-Rangers star struggling to make mark after surprise move to Cyprus

A former Rangers star is struggling to make his mark in Cyprus after a surprise summer transfer to Anorthosis Famagusta.

Lafferty, who scored 42 goals in 164 appearances and won six trophies across two spells at Rangers, spent the second half of last season back in Scottish football with Kilmarnock.

The 34-year-old was outstanding in Ayrshire, scoring 13 times in 13 appearances.

However, despite indicating a willingness to extend his stay at Rugby Park following their relegation to the Championship, he left in controversial circumstances in June and signed for Anorthosis just a few weeks later.

It was another interesting move for the former Ger, who had already played in Turkey, Norway and Italy during a quirky career.

Lafferty started well in Famagusta, scoring in a Europa League Qualifier against Austrian giants Rapid Vienna.

However, his new club still lost out on aggregate and things haven’t been going well collectively or individually since then.

After qualifying for the Europa Conference League group stages, Anorthosis lost to both Partizan Belgrade and KAA Gent, while they’re ninth in the 12-team Cypriot First Division with just two wins from their opening five matches.

Lafferty has made nine appearances across all competitions but is yet to add to his goals tally and missed a 2-1 defeat at AEL Limassol on Sunday.

The Northern Ireland international’s deal is due to run through until the end of the season, but the last time he was abroad, at  Serie B side Reggina, his contract was terminated early by mutual consent.

It’ll be interesting to see if he can recapture last season’s form to improve Anorthosis’ fortunes both in European and domestic competition or if this proves to be an unsuccessful adventure for the ex-Ibrox forward.

In other news, a Rangers star has hit back on social media amid criticism.
