Former Rangers defender Calvin Bassey scores for Fulham as they record a famous late victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

In what was the 24-year-old defender’s first goal for the club, Calvin Bassey reacted quickest in the box to fire home the opener in the match from a second-half corner.

It was a goal to remember for the £19m Nigerian international star and his first strike since scoring against FC Volendam for Ajax last season.

Not exactly famed for his goalscoring exploits, Calvin Bassey only ever scored once for Rangers, netting in a 4-0 League Cup win over Falkirk in 2020.

The Calvin Bassey strike wound up being a crucial one too as Fulham earned a legendary win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils had thought they’d rescued a point when Harry Maguire reacted to a spilled shot to finish like a poacher in the Fulham six yard box with 89 minutes on the clock.

But deep into injury time Calvin Bassey’s Nigeria international teammate Alex Iwobi stole the three points when he gave the goalkeeper the eyes and cooly finished into the near corner.

The result lifts Fulham up to 12th in the Premier League table with Manchester United in sixth, now eight points behind Aston Villa in 4th and a Champions League place.

Rangers fans everywhere would’ve celebrated that Calvin Bassey goal like it was one scored by their team.

The ex-Leicester City youth defender remains a hugely popular figure at Ibrox and actually broke the club’s transfer record (£20m) when he moved to Ajax in 2022.

Things didn’t work out in the Netherlands for the defender – who started his career at left-back – before moving to the Premier League in the summer.

Having made 17 English top flight appearances this season, the defender has also just returned from the AFCON where he was a beaten finalist with Nigeria.
