Former Rangers attacker Scott Wright is trying to carve out a new career down south after a summer of sweeping change at Ibrox.

The 27-year-old ex-Aberdeen winger is one of 16 players who left Rangers this summer, bringing to an end a three-and-a-half year stint in Glasgow.

Signing a £300k deal to move to League One Birmingham City, Scott Wright has been getting his feet under the desk in the English third flight.

But it’s in the Football League Trophy that Wright has just exploded onto the scene with a deadly double in a 4-0 romp.

Scott Wright nets Birmingham double

Scott Wright’s move to Birmingham City started extremely brightly, with the winger popping up with a last-minute debut winner.

Brought to Birmingham by ex-Brendan Rodgers assistant Chris Davies, Wright is part of a substantial overhaul at St Andrews under US-backed investment.

But since that opening day victory over Wigan in League One, Wright’s exposure to the first-team at Birmingham has mostly been from the bench.

Handed a start in the Football League Trophy against Shrewsbury, it’s an opportunity Wright has grabbed with both hands and two goals.

Wright found himself free in the six-yard box to tap a rebound into an empty net after just eight minutes on only his second start for the Blues.

The right-winger then pulled it back across the box for ex-Celtic midfielder Tomoki Iwata to smash the ball into the top corner.

And Wright’s contribution wasn’t finished there, with the ex-Ibrox winger adding a well-worked third by slotting home after a neat double one-two.

The rout was completed the in second half when Emil Hansson slotted home Birmingham’s fourth goal when he tapped in another rebound off the post.

Rangers loanee Ben Davies, who is at Birmingham City for the season, also played the entire 90 minutes in the match at the centre of defence.

Ex-Rangers winger beams come full-time

A smarting Scott Wright spoke after the thumping Birmingham victory over Shrewsbury and the winger couldn’t get the smile from his face.

The ex-Aberdeen forward has found starting chances limited at the Blues so far and would’ve been delighted to score two goals to give manager Chris Davies food for thought.

The result also means that Birmingham have immediately bounced back from their first League One defeat of the season at the weekend.

Despite the Blues being beaten 1-0 by Charlton Athletic, they remain top of English League One by two points.

“I thought it was great,” Wright told Birmingham’s official YouTube channel. “I think it was really important for us as a team to bounce back as quick as we can from the disappointment at the weekend.

“I think we done that today. It was a really good team performance.

“A lot of different things which were good, in terms of quality of the ball, a wee bit of pressing as well.

“We wanted to right a few wrongs from the weekend and I think we done that.”

Scott Wright made 120 appearances for Rangers, including a start in the 2022 Europa League Final, scoring 12 goals and laying on seven assists.
