Former Rangers star Kevin Muscat wasted no time in showing where his allegiances lie amid strong links to Celtic and their new manager Ange Postecoglou.

According to reports prior to Postecoglou’s appointment, ex-Aussie international Muscat, 47, was being considered as part of the ex-Socceroos coach’s backroom staff.

However – and whilst this would later be rubbished by the likes of the Glasgow Times – Muscat himself sent out a strong message by attending Oswalds Bar alongside ex-Gers skipper and fellow Australian Craig Moore.

The city centre Rangers pub was delighted to have the former Gers full-back in the building and it’s telling that Muscat managed to get over to the UK before Ange checks in for his first day as Celtic boss.

The ex-Crystal Palace, Wolves and Millwall defender spent one season at Ibrox in 2002/03, winning a legendary treble under Alex McLeish.

In total Muscat played in 22 league games and made a solid contribution to the success of the club that season.

Infamous for his hard edge and wild temperament, Muscat’s career upset the apple cart down south with numerous red card clashes and run-ins with leading footballers of the time.

That didn’t stop the full-back carving out a successful career but due to his temperament, there have always been rumours that this is part of the reason why he never played in the Old Firm derby.

Muscat also managed 46 caps and 10 goals for Australia as well as a host of appearances for clubs in his homeland such as South Melbourne and Melbourne Victory.

As a manager, the former Gers full-back has also spent time at Sint Truiden in the Belgian First Division A but it appears clear he will not be joining Postecoglou at Parkhead.

Well, unless he wants to anger the Parkhead legions by showing up in a Rangers bar just days before any announcement.

With the appointment of the Australian coach, Rangers now have a huge chance to extend the Celtic banter era beyond just last season.
