Former Rangers striker Nacho Novo is “keen” to succeed Crusaders manager Stephen Baxter in the NIFL Premiership.

Stephen Baxter, 58, has been in charge of the Belfast club for 19-years and will officially step down from his role as manager come the end of the season.

Nacho Novo – who has just been released from an interim management job in the lower tiers of American football – is said to have expressed his interest in succeeding Baxter.

That’s according to the Belfast Telegraph, who claim the former Rangers forward is one of a number of candidates who’ve expressed their interest in the role.

Nacho Novo “keen” on Crusaders job

If Nacho Novo is successful in his application to become the new Crusaders boss, then Stephen Baxter’s will be some big shoes to fill.

Having been appointed way back in 2005, having spent two spells playing at the club as a striker, the BBC have branded Baxter the “longest serving manager” in world football.

In a remarkable spell in charge of the Northern Irish club, Baxter initially suffered relegation from the top flight of the country’s football pyramid after taking over mid-season.

Building the club back up to be one of the most successful in Northern Ireland in the modern era, Baxter’s record of three Irish Premiership titles, four Irish Cups, a League Cup, a Setanta Cup and three County Antrim Shields is an impressive one.

Belfast club to take time over Stephen Baxter predecessor

Nacho Novo – who spent time playing in Northern Ireland with Glentoran – is trying to secure his first full-time role in management.

The former Ibrox striker is one of a number of names in the running to take over as Crusaders manager, with the club set to take their time over deciding Baxter’s predecessor.

Nacho Novo is best known for his time in Scottish football but as mentioned previously has close links to the Northern Irish game.

The Spanish striker joined Raith Rovers in 2001 before moving to Rangers via a stint with Dundee, going on to spend six trophy-laden years at Ibrox.
