Former Rangers player Alex Rae has landed a dig at Celtic on Twitter following their 0-0 draw with a depleted St Mirren.
Shortly after the news emerged that they had been granted their wish in terms of a rearranged Old Firm, they had the chance to close the gap at the top of the table back to four points.
It looked a nailed-on win for Ange Postecoglou’s side in Paisley, given that the hosts were extremely understrength.
A Covid outbreak rendered a host of senior players unavailable and after their request to have the match rescheduled was rejected, they had to press on with a mixture of first-teamers, youngsters and recalled loanees.
Yet, the side that Jim Goodwin did put out refused to lie down and despite having 84% possession and 30 shots, Celtic failed to score.
The shock result leaves them six points behind the Gers with both teams having played 19 matches.
Ex-Rangers player roasts Celtic after St Mirren draw
Rangers fans were in stitches after the final whistle and former Gers midfielder and St Mirren manager turned pundit Alex Rae didn’t have much sympathy for the Hoops.
“Not a lot goal mouth action to report as both share the spoils and this is big point for Celtic who now reduce the lead to 6 points at top,” he wrote on Twitter. “Well played the St Mirren youngsters.”
The tweet didn’t go down overly well with Celtic fans but Bears loved it and it had racked up over 4k likes by the time of writing.
Rangers will have to be careful they don’t fall into the same trap of taking the depleted Buddies lightly on Boxing Day but Gio’s men know that if they get all three points at Ibrox, they’ll be at least six clear when the league comes to a brief halt.
Meanwhile, a player Rangers fans are desperate to see at Ibrox bagged an assist in an impressive win last night.
