Rangers search for a new manager has accelerated this week with Phillipe Clement emerging as a possible option.
The Belgian enjoyed sustained success in the Juniper Pro League as well as the cup competitions in his homeland and deserved his promotion to Ligue 1.
The man responsible was Paul Mitchell and eagle-eyed readers will be aware that Rangers have been linked with the former Monaco sporting director in the past, as well as Phillipe Clement.
The duo oversaw a third-place finish in the French top flight, however, Clement’s exit this summer was one that Mitchell saw as unavoidable after missing out on the European palces altogether.
Rangers could pair Phillipe Clement with Paul Mitchell again
It isn’t totally inconceivable that the pair could be reunited at Rangers with Phillipe Clement one of the favourites to replace Michael Beale and, certainly, one of the names who most fans would get behind.
Style of play and a proven track record are hard to find on a budget but he ticks both boxes.
As for Paul Mitchell, a CV that includes Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, RB Leipzig and Monaco is one that the Rangers board should see as enough evidence that he is a proven operator at elite level.
How the club has found itself in the position that both key football appointments need to be filled is incredible.
Ross Wilson left the club in April which should have been plenty time to get a new sporting director in before the transfer window opened.
Rangers aren’t in the position to take risks, hire potential or prospects, and Phillipe Clement and Paul Mitchell are as good as we can get on our budget.
If they would be willing to work together again that is.
