Former England international striker and Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips has claimed that Rangers are currently “deep in negotiations” with Jack Wilshere’s representatives.
Phillips’ claims come after a source close to Wilshere suggested that the midfielder would consider a move to Ibrox following his release from West Ham, but as of yet there had been no contact.
Phillips believes things have taken a significant step forward and that should Rangers secure the player, he would be a “fantastic signing”.
“I understand Wilshere is deep into negotiations with Rangers,” said Phillips [Football Insider].
“I think that move would suit him down to the ground. I think it would be a breeze in that league for him.
“I am big fan of Jack Wilshere. When he is fit and is travelling with the ball, there are not many better. A tremendous left foot and he can ghost past people.
“If he can stay fit, he would dominate in that league. It would definitely be a fantastic signing for Rangers.”
If the information Phillips has is true then it would suggest that Rangers have stepped up their interest in the player who reportedly has a “no-compete clause” in his contract [T4O].
The 4th Official report alleges that Wilshere is unable to sign a deal with a rival Premier League side after his release from West Ham.
A “source” close to Wilshere also told Press Association journalist Andy Newport that Wilshere would be willing to a consider a move to Rangers.
“Rangers would be an option for Jack if there had been any contact,” said the source [Evening Express].
“So far, however, there hasn’t been any.
“Jack thinks Rangers are a great club. They tried to take him on loan when Walter Smith was in charge back in 2010 just as he was starting out at Arsenal but he ended up going to Bolton.”
Rangers fans themselves invited Wilshere to Ibrox after the player negotiated a release from his contract at West Ham and the Olympic Stadium.
