Former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere left West Ham yesterday after agreeing to end his Hammers contract early – and some Rangers fans want Steven Gerrard to bring him to Ibrox.

Wilshere released a lengthy statement on Twitter insisting he hadn’t been given a chance in his two-year stint with West Ham, as he confirmed he would be becoming a free agent.

The 28-year-old  has made only 16 league appearances since joining West Ham and featured only oncethis season, in the 5-1 victory over League One Hull in the Carabao Cup.

Wilshere made 197 first-team appearances for Arsenal and was part of the 2014 and 2015 FA Cup-winning sides; earning 34 England caps, the last of which came in the 2-1 defeat by Iceland in the last 16 of Euro 2016.

Despite leaving the London Stadium a year early, Wilshere will still reportedly pocket most of the £100,000 he would have earned had he still be part of David Moyes’ squad.

A move to sign Wilshere does seem unlikely but with almost £4million just hitting his bank account, the financial aspect of it may not be a consideration if he’s offered a short-term deal at Ibrox and a chance to prove his fitness.

After announcing his West Ham exit, some Rangers fans encouraged him to move to Ibrox – although some had their tongue planted firmly in their cheek.
