Ex-Celtic striker refutes claim Rangers’ rivals should be handed title

Ex-Celtic striker Charlie Nicholas disagrees with the idea that Rangers’ Old Firm rivals should be handed the title before the league campaign is finished.

Speaking after Celtic boss Neil Lennon claimed the Parkhead club should be awarded the title if the coronavirus forces the cancellation of the league campaign, Nicholas said the debate is “not important”.

But for what it’s worth, the ex-Arsenal forward is very clear that he does not believe you can award a league title without completing the league season.

“You can’t finish anything until it’s concluded. I’m all for and I can understand people saying: ‘This is Celtic’s title, they should be handed the title’, but it’s not finished, it’s not complete,” said Nicholas [Sky Sports].

“Will they win it? Of course they will win it. Will Liverpool win the Premier League title? Of course.

“But you ask teams like Leeds. You have Karren Brady at West Ham saying it should be null and void and we should be starting again because they are safe but what about Bournemouth who have a game in hand of the three above them?

“So there are so many things that are unfair.”

Nicholas is clearly trying to talk reason here with the Gillette Soccer Saturday pundit urging supporters to be patient in the wake of mass sporting cancellations.

The former Parkhead forward’s comments on the subject are refreshing and not in line with the contradictory views of the likes of Chris Sutton.

Rangers fans have been criticising Sutton for claiming Celtic should be awarded the title up north but suggesting there are doubts over Liverpool’s situation down south.

As it stands all domestic fixtures have been postponed indefinitely as Europe is rocked by the virus.
