Ex-Aston Villa star Ahmed Elmohamady has teased both Rangers and Villains fans by sharing a Steven Gerrard-inspired update on his social media accounts.

The now-retired Egyptian right-back finished his career at Villa Park in the summer, playing over 120 times for the club over four seasons and helping them to promotion back to the Premier League.

Known to still have close connections at Aston Villa, the former full-back appeared to give a glowing commendation of Gerrard’s by simply sharing a picture of the ex-England captain.

Ahmed Elmohamady played against Gerrard during his time as an Egypt international – where he won 92 caps, scored six goals and lifted the Africa Cup of Nations twice – and his tweet is a testament to growing excitement at Villa Park about Gerrard’s appointment.

Reports coming from Birmingham suggest that the deal to take Gerrard and his backroom staff from Ibrox is all but done with a mixed feeling amongst the Gers support.

Rangers fans are certainly grateful for the progress made under the current management team but with the season in full swing and so much riding on it, the timing is certainly not great.

Comments made by Steven Gerrard about being happy at Ibrox, going for more, defending the title with our lives and shutting down “silly questions” have also somewhat tainted his once impenetrable aura in Govan.

But Rangers have bounced back from losing several key figures in the past and no one man – no matter how large that man’s profile is – is bigger than the club.

Attention will quickly turn to who is set to fill the hotseat and fans will be expecting a swift appointment with tough matches against Hibs, Sparta Prague and Livingston imminent.

There is one name which has been extensively linked to the job from down south but Rangers insiders have moved quickly to give a telling update regarding the reports.
