Former Rangers striker turned pundit Kris Boyd has attracted attention for comments he made about the ongoing penalty fiasco at Ibrox in his latest column.
Boyd was commentating as Ianis Hagi – the club’s fourth taker of the campaign – missed from the spot against Braga, meaning Rangers have scored 4 of the 10 they’ve taken this season.
The ex-striker claims that Rangers captain James Tavernier should never have been taken off penalties in his latest column, pointing the finger at Steven Gerrard [Scottish Sun].
Fair enough, but this is in stark contrast given to coverage of comments made by Boyd back in October.
In quotes attributed to the same newspaper, Boyd suggested that the penalty responsibility should be on the strikers, challenging them to “step up and accept the pressure” [Scottish Sun].
Whilst Boyd never directly said so in the attributed quotes, the Scottish Sun – a newspaper which Boyd writes for – suggested he claimed that Morelos or Defoe should replace Tavernier in the headline.
Did the striker – who has been praised for his recent approach to punditry by Rangers fans – forget what he said back in October? Or were his comments misrepresented by the newspaper?
Because it looks decidedly strange to suggest a manager should make a decision to then go back and criticise it months later after he’s made it.
Especially if you’re a former player of the club you’re criticising.
