Does squad number change signal the end for controversial Rangers star?

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard was clear that there won’t be six centre-backs in his squad come the beginning of next season but does a number change within the side hint to who’ll be cut?

Gers new-boy Jack Simpson has been awarded the number 4 shirt which was previously held by the outgoing George Edmundson after the defender moved on-loan to Derby.

Whilst the ex-Oldham centre-half will return to Ibrox in the summer competition will be fierce and Simpson will also be joining the club full-time.

The fact Steven Gerrard has given him the number shows he intends to use him in his squad and when you consider Leon Balogun, Filip Helander and Connor Goldson are also in the side, Edmundson’s chances begin to look limited.

The defender obviously also hasn’t been helped by that Covid-19 breach and subsequent suspension in November and since then Edmundson has struggled to regain his footing in the Gers squad.

It’s clear nothing has been decided by Steven Gerrard but did admit Edmundson had his confidence knocked by the incident and was out at the Rams to get his career back on track.

Signed for a reported £650k from Oldham Athletic last season [Belfast Telegraph], the 23-year-old was a popular figure amongst the fans at Ibrox who appreciated his workrate and commitment as a centre-back.

But even Edmundson will admit he’d do well to shift those four names come next season and the number change may well be one of the signals that his Rangers career could be coming to an end.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has also hinted that the Ibrox fans could see Simpson for the first time as the club prepare to visit Hamilton.
