Hull City midfielder, Greg Docherty, has told the Milngavie Herald he felt ‘helpless’ after being frozen out at Ibrox by Steven Gerrard but that he hopes to return to Rangers one day.
The 23-year-old joined Hull in a deal worth a reported £400,000 in last month following a difficult two and a half years with the Gers [Hull Daily Mail].
The lifelong bluenose arrived from Hamilton Accies in January 2018 and started relatively well, but the arrival of Gerrard at the club a few months later, saw him drop down the pecking order.
Docherty didn’t make a single league appearance under the Liverpool legend and was shipped out for loan spells at Shrewsbury Town and Hibs.

He’s disappointed at how things turned out but doesn’t hold any grudges and is eyeing a return down the line.
“I don’t think it was the case that I wasn’t good enough, it was just that my style of play maybe wasn’t suited to the manager who’s currently there at the moment,” Docherty told the Milngavie Herald. “And that’s fine, that’s football and it happens all the time.”
“It was obviously more difficult because when I got the move to the club it was one I had wanted my whole life. When you’re getting paid to play football and you’re not playing you can feel a bit helpless and hopeless and I just wanted to get in control again.
“Hopefully I don’t close the door and I left on good terms and I’ve done myself and reputation alright. It’s not as if I spat the dummy for not playing and I’m hoping that door’s not closed. In the future, you never know.”

Hull City midfielder Docherty disappointed with Rangers stint but open to future return – Verdict
These are honest comments from Docherty and it’s little surprise to hear that he’s disappointed with how things turned out at Rangers.
When he joined on a long-term deal in 2018 he likely saw himself playing a big role in midfield for years to come but despite excelling out on loan, he was unable to convince Gerrard that he was a better option in midfield than the likes of established internationals Ryan Jack, Steven Davis and Glen Kamara.
It’s clear that there will always be a desire on Docherty’s part to make a big impact at Rangers but his focus must now turn to advancing his reputation south of the border.
Hull supporters were delighted when their club secured his signature and he could make his debut for the Tigers on Saturday in a League Cup first-round clash away to Sunderland.
