Do Rangers fans need to ease up on Liverpool loanee Sheyi Ojo?

Another Sheyi Ojo appearance for Rangers, another frustrated response from the Ibrox faithful.

The 22-year-old Liverpool loanee burst onto the scene in Govan and despite impressing in early season has drifted in and out of the team in the last few months.

But do the Rangers support need to lighten up when it comes to the powerful winger’s poor form?

Despite scoring five goals in his first 12 matches, Ojo has failed to score in his last 18.

His last strike – the winning goal in the 1-0 win over Feyenoord in September – is probably as vital a contribution as anyone has made in Europe all season.

In fact, it’s in the Europa League where Ojo impressed the most with four of those five Rangers goals coming between qualification and the group stages.

Going into the second half of the season, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and put his poor domestic form down to getting used to Scottish football.

Ojo has – justifiably at times – faced numerous complaints about his application and attitude and seriously does not help himself with his body language in matches.

But the winger is an easy target for criticism and the player rarely gets the opportunity to even settle into the game before grumbles and groans follow his every touch.

This is a player who has done nothing but big up the support [Rangers] since he got here.

His reputation suggests Ojo could be a real asset in the second half of the season should the recently declared Nigerian winger reach his potential during his stay here.

It looks increasingly likely he’ll see the season out at Ibrox and having a confident, on-form Ojo could prove invaluable to the title race. He is an option we’ve yet to see the best of.

Even against Stranraer, the entire team didn’t play well and he’d have maybe had a goal had luck went his way in a very close offside decision.

For me, there’s more to come from the young winger and we need to stick by him as we enter a potentially era-defining few months.

Is it time the club’s supporters eased up on the winger and offered him encouragement instead of rushing to bemoan him?
