‘Different class’ Kieran Dowell continues to earn Birmingham City plaudits on his way to Wembley

Rangers still have a lot of work to do in the transfer market in the summer with numerous players needing to be moved out and several more brought in.

There are no guarantees that Philippe Clement will still be in the Ibrox hotseat for the second phase of the rebuild, especially if the Light Blues manager can’t find a way to be more clinical away from home.

Someone else who is unlikely to be part of the Rangers squad next season is Kieran Dowell despite an ongoing love-in from his new club Birmingham City.

Kieran Dowell earns the plaudits for Birmingham City

Having already scored his first goal for Birmingham, Dowell has re-discovered his mojo and is clearly enjoying life with the League 1 leaders with another assist to his name against Bradford City.

The 2-1 win sees Dowell on his way to Wembley for the Vertu Trophy final.

Blues manager Chris Davies has been stunned by Dowell’s impact with the club’s social media account calling him “different class”.

Not only do fans want to sign Dowell, but a double Ibrox swoop for “brick wall” Ben Davies would also be appreciated.

It’s a few years ago now, but when Norwich City signed Dowell from Everton in 2020, he cost £1.5m.

Not the sort of fee that would allow Rangers to go out and sign someone like Vaclav Cerny on a permanent deal, however, it would easily cover Lyall Cameron’s development fee with plenty of change left over.

How much is Kieran Dowell on at Rangers?

Dowell is on £16,000 per week according to Salary Sport, Nils Koppen needs to get better value for money for a key position.

With no new arrivals in January, Clement is having to work with what he’s got – a task made harder by the absence of Connor Barron.

Looking further afield, like the markets that saw Mohamed Diomande, Hamza Igamane and Oscar Cortes sign for Rangers, that £16k per week can go a long way.

Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande are well established now, but they need support from someone else capable of scoring goals and breaking down opposition teams.

Hopefully, Dowell keeps his form up because, until he is sold, Rangers won’t be able to bring in a replacement.
