Rangers boss Steven Gerrard appeared to make a subtle reference to Celtic dragging last season’s Scottish Cup into the next as he discussed this year’s competition.
There’s an increasing conversation around the Scottish Cup this season with the Covid-19 pandemic currently forcing the competition into cold storage.
Asked about the competition potentially being scrapped this season, Gerrard claims he wants the Scottish Cup to be played but added if it can’t be played, we might need to “force“ it into next season instead.
“I very much hope it goes ahead and we can find room and time in the schedule to get it played,” said Gerrard [Rangers].
“It’s a massive competition we want to go and compete in and try and win but at the same time we obviously respect the situation that we’re in.
“It’s really challenging for the authorities in terms of the schedule but hopefully now they’ve moved some of the league games around there’s enough time to compete in that competition this season.
“If not, we might have to just force it into next season.”
That final line.
There was a feeling that the Scottish Cup was jammed into a hectic schedule this season to appease one club who would go on to win the trophy.
Now, we obviously can’t say for sure if this was in the thinking of Gerrard’s when he was making these comments but what is clear he expects the trophy to be played for.

Even if it needs to be forced into next season, as last season’s was this.
It’s not the only thing which would’ve peeved Steven Gerrard from today’s conference as Rangers fans railed against the latest SFA nonsense.
