It was only a matter of time before Derek McInnes’ name started doing the managerial rounds at Rangers.

The former Aberdeen manager is never far away from links to the job at Ibrox whenever it has become available on a near yearly basis as of late.

Attentions have quickly turned to who Rangers might bring in to replace Philippe Clement with the club believed to be interested in signing an interim until the summer.

And we’ve learned Derek McInnes is interested in returning to Ibrox, over seven years on from snubbing the chance to become Rangers boss.

Derek McInnes wants Rangers manager’s gig

Former Rangers midfielder Derek McInnes is never far away from links to the vacant Ibrox manager’s job.

The Kilmarnock manager has close links to Rangers and has been routinely mentioned alongside the position as the managerial merry go-round continues at Ibrox.

Rangers News has learned that Derek McInnes would be open to discussions surrounding the vacant Rangers manager’s position.

Whilst Kilmarnock have had a stuttering season under McInnes, the 53-year-old remains confident that he is right man for the role and that he could have a big impact in Glasgow.

The news comes after Ally McCoist namedropped Derek McInnes in the Rangers manager’s hunt live on TalkSPORT.

“Derek McInnes would come into the equation,” said McCoist. “He is a fine manager at Kilmarnock, knows the league, players and club.

”There are one or two options. But I don’t think there are any glaringly obvious candidates right now either.”

Derek McInnes turned down Rangers chance in 2017

Derek McInnes will certainly split Rangers fans when it comes to the vacant manager’s role at Ibrox.

The former Aberdeen boss has been routinely linked to the gig at Rangers and even infamously turned down the position back in December 2017.

Since then, it’s been claimed that legendary former Ibrox manager Walter Smith urged McInnes to turn down Rangers with the club something of a basket case.

Little over seven years on and McInnes is once again being linked to Rangers but this time there is little chance Del would turn down the chance to manage the club.

It’s been a common complaint of Rangers supporters that the club lacks identity and McInnes would certainly offer a return to the standards of the past.

The former 9IAR midfielder played at Ibrox under Walter Smith and whilst he might not be the most glamorous choice, certainly knows what it means to represent the Rangers jersey.
