Defiant Ianis Hagi on clawing back Celtic lead and what Rangers stars must ‘understand’

Ianis Hagi is adamant Rangers must learn from their defeat to St Mirren as he believes they can still claw back Celtic’s lead at the Premiership summit.

The Light Blues had plenty of chances in Paisley but could only muster the one goal through Danilo who levelled Oisin Smyth’s penalty that was ridiculously conceded by Jack Butland.

Yet, despite Gers‘ dominance and desire to win all three points, it was the home side who landed the killer blow in stoppage time through Caolan Boyde-Munce.

And manager Philippe Clement was furious at full-time.

Another poor result and one Kris Boyd felt could pile sack pressure on Clement in the dugout.

For Hagi, he reckons it must be a learning experience.

Rivals Celtic had won their match earlier in the day and it left the gap at the top sitting at 12 points.

But Hagi insists there is still plenty of twists and turns in the league to come with so many football matches yet to be played.

The Romanian remained defiant after the full-time result, despite his disappointment, but he did issue a demand to his teammates to understand what they must do to win clashes in big moments.

Ianis Hagi hopes Rangers will learn from defeats to bounce back

Hagi says the team were not “dynamic” enough and they must improve there.

And he hopes Rangers start against Motherwell later this afternoon.

“Yes, 100 per cent. That’s who we play for – the fans, for the history of this club, and for protecting the image of this club,” he said when asked about owing the punters a win.

“Obviously we’re not happy with how it ended the other night against St Mirren and hopefully we can get back on track. For us it’s just one game at a time.

“We understand the position we’re in in the league, we understand the points difference, but there is still plenty of football to be played.

“Hopefully games like the one against St Mirren will make us understand what it takes to win at this time of year.

Hagi feels Rangers dominated St Mirren before late winner

“We just need to be all-round more dynamic and understand that this time of the year is really important for this club. Hopefully we can get the three points against Motherwell and move on.”

Missing big chances has been Rangers’ downfall this term and against the Buddies it was the same old issue.

And that is another element of their game Hagi insists they must brush up on.

“Everybody knows it was a game of two different halves. At this time of the year when you play away from home, it’s not enough just to play one half with the standards we have at Rangers. We all know that so it wasn’t good enough.

“We dominated the second half. We were more dynamic and we were showing more of our attributes. We were enjoying the game and were unlucky as well not to get more than one goal. But we don’t kill off the game.”
