Rangers player ratings vs St Mirren as 8/10 substitute can’t bail out 4/10 sinner

There was a sense of foreboding when Rangers’ strikers missed their umpteenth chance of the evening at St Mirren.

The Paisley natives had taken the lead following a horrendous, inexplicable lapse in judgment by Jack Butland where the usually composed goalkeeper gave away a first-half penalty.

Half-time sub Danilo would eventually level proceedings despite having more than one chance earlier in the match to score before he did.

But as the clock ticked down – three minutes into injury time – Dujon Sterling coughed up possession inside his own half to Jonah Ayunga and the ball would eventually find Caolan Boyd-Munce who leathered in a long-range drill.

It was another frustration for Rangers who would lose 2-1 despite having the vast majority of the ball and the chances.

Here is how the Rangers News team rated the players on a disappointing evening.

Rangers player ratings vs St Mirren

Jack Butland – 4

No idea what the goalkeeper was thinking when he absolutely clattered St Mirren’s attacker to give away a totally needless penalty. Didn’t have much else to do which will frustrate fans and his manager even more considering his error. Had no chance with the winner.

James Tavernier – 7

Some really enticing crosses from the right-flank and went desperately close with a free-kick. Was a constant threat to the Buddies going forward. Took a really quick corner which almost resulted in a goal which was very clever.

Dujon Sterling – 5

Chosen at centre-half instead of Robin Propper which remains an interesting mindset from the manager. Won his aerial duels for the most part and his vision and passing range was decent. Dealt well with Olusanya even if the attacker outmuscled him in moments.

Ultimately made a serious mistake in his own half at the winning goal.

Leon Balogun – 4

Couldn’t last 20 minutes as he picked up an injury after making a decent clearance despite the knock.

Jefte – 6

Took him a wee while to get motoring with the right-hand side seeing more of the ball. When he did move he attacked when he could but never looked like the match-winner.

Connor Barron – 4

Had one shot on goal from outside the box but that was about it from the midfielder who was brought off for Nico Raskin at half-time.

Mo Diomande – 6

Constantly demanded the ball at every opportunity and, especially when Raskin came into the fold, he looked more comfortable and willing to get forward.

Vaclav Cerny – 7

Was dangerous on the flank but remains guilty of cutting inside at every opportunity. Did create chances and clattered the woodwork.

Ianis Hagi – 5

He’s a creative outlet full of running but was perhaps not at his best as he was marked well by St Mirren’s defenders. Still managed to bring his teammates into the game when he himself was being quietened.

Nedim Bajrami – 4

Offered very little by way of attacking intent before he was subbed at half-time for Danilo.

Hamza Igamane – 5

Missed a big chance at 1-1 after really strong play made the opportunity for himself. Rashly snatched at things at times but as a target man he’s coming into his own. Eventually subbed for Cyriel Dessers.

Robin Propper (sub) – 5

Decision making has been questioned at times but he read the game and often dropped in at the right moment to avoid St Mirren counter-attacking. Seemed to work well with Sterling.

Danilo (sub) – 6

Had more than one opportunity within 10 minutes of the restart which was more than his side had produced in the 45 before he arrived. Did take his chance to level.

Nico Raskin (sub) – 8

Made a difference quite quickly after the break by moving the ball quickly and decisively. Opened the game up and despite only getting one half he proved to be one of the best on the pitch.

Cyriel Dessers (sub) – 3

Didn’t have too much time to try and influence the game.
