Premier League Everton have shortlisted Rangers captain David Weir as they consider the director of football position at Goodison Park.
David Weir is currently in a similar position with Premier League success story Brighton & Hove Albion and has carved out a big reputation for himself south of the border.
Weir, 54, spent five years at Rangers in the twilight of his career and captained the club before earning a place in the Ibrox Hall of Fame.
Returning as assistant manager during the reign of Mark Warburton, Weir has now moved upstairs with Brighton, who are considered amongst the Premier League’s most well run clubs.
David Weir eyed for Everton return
Whilst Rangers fans know David Weir best from his time at Ibrox, the ex-Scotland international spent the bulk of his career with Everton.
Having come through the youth ranks at Falkirk and then moving to Hearts, it’s from the Toffees that Weir moved to Rangers in 2007.
The Telegraph are reporting that Everton are now eyeing a sensational return for David Weir following the £400m takeover from the Freidkin Group in December last year.
As things stand, no decision has been made on current incumbent Kevin Thelwell, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
Should David Weir be convinced to move to Everton, it comes at an interesting time for the club with David Moyes returning to Goodison Park earlier in the season.
Everton are also set to move to the club’s new £750m 52,888 seater Everton FC stadium ahead of next season.
Do Rangers have director of football gap?
It’s great to see David Weir doing so well at Brighton but Rangers have their own issues in their recruitment and executive structure.
Nils Koppen is the club’s technical director, which is a similar role to the director of football, but the Gers could still appoint another executive in this area if it’s deemed necessary.
Rangers are currently in the midst of a rigorous independent review into how the club has been run in recent seasons.

We expect the review to shine a light on Rangers’ shortcomings in the transfer market with several overpaid, underachieving players leaving Ibrox in disgrace.
A talented sporting director is crucial to Rangers establishing a functional and successful player trading model and it’s arguably a position the club are yet to properly fill.
Ross Wilson left as Rangers’ de facto director of football for Nottingham Forest in April 2023 and Rangers are yet to settle on a consistent transfer structure since.
